Win Win Win! Family Ticket for Thornton Hall Farm Park!

Today we were lucky enough to be the guests of Thornton Hall Farm Park in Thornton in Craven – not the Thornton in Bradford as I foolishly thought. What a lovely village Thornton in Craven is – driving up there reminded me of one of the reasons we chose to live in Bingley, namely its proximity to all things beautiful. It took us about 25 minutes to get there, door to door, which makes it about equidistant with Hesketh Farm at Bolton Abbey in times of driving time.

There was no issue parking, in fact there were so few cars there at first we thought it was shut! But we had a friendly welcome from the staff there who were all great people -persons and very warm and friendly. The place was VERY quiet when we got there – apparently their Christmas celebrations start next week and so the week before is usually very quiet which makes sense. It was great for us as my oldest son doesn’t like crowds, so they had a great time having the huge slide to themselves. Stupidly I didn’t get a photo – but it’s very similar to the large slide at Dragon’s Den and the children had to sit in sacks to go down. The boys loved it and went on over and over again. There is also a hay maze, animals to feed, ropes to swing on, an outside play area and tea rooms, as well as regular feeding sessions and egg collecting. Here’s what we got up to.

image (1)
The outside play area

I thought the outside play area was great – good quality play equipement and a good variety for all ages. Probably nice in the summer – wrap up warm it’s colder than Bingley for sure! Nearby are the quad bikes, the caterpillar rides and trailer rides (extra fee applies). They looked like good fun.

image (2)
The rope swing

This was a great idea! Lots of rope swings with mats underneath, we really enjoyed it and it was great to see the boys initially worried and unsure learn how to swing really confidently. Loved it!

image (4)
Egg collecting

We were led outside by one of the farm guides, who was really nice, to see the chickens and collect eggs. She explained about the different kind of chickens and why the eggs looked different. Then we took some eggs home (£2.50 for 12) for breakfast.

image (5)
Bunny stroking

As well as collecting eggs there are regular animal feeding and petting times, although you can also buy food for £1 and feed the animals yourself! As well as chickens and bunnies there were cows, sheep/lambs, horses, donkeys, llamas and ostriches (or were they emus?!). The animals were all really tame and happy to be fed and stroked.

We had lunch in the cafe which could have done with being a bit bigger, though extension work is currently taking place so it’s something the farm is obviously aware of.

Thornton Hall Farm Park have kindly given me a family ticket for four to give away to one lucky Bingley Family! To enter, you need to like Bingley Mums on facebook and comment on the post pinned to the top of the page saying you’ve liked the page. Share the post and tag your friends for an extra entry! I will pick a winner at random on 5th Demember 2015. Note that only residents of Bingley can enter this giveaway as I will be dropping the ticket off at your house. The ticket is for normal entry to the farm so if you go over Christmas, you will have to pay a small additional charge to visit Santa, that sort of thing.

A bit about Adele:

I’m a curious person always wanting to know more so studying is a hobby!  I had been looking for a career change for a while, not quite finding anything that suited me just right. I looked further into YogaBellies as I’d practiced yoga following my own pregnancy to reclaim my body. I love the holistic approach YogaBellies offers to mums, both before and after birth.”

National Autistic Society Night Out!

Recently, we’ve had a brush with autism as we go down the diagnostic route with my oldest son. I’ve been lucky enough to be supported on my journey by local business owners MaFt (from MaFt’s Computer Repairs) and Laura (from Great Shakes). Here is what MaFt has asked me to share with you today…
As your local, volunteer-run NAS branch we provide support to adults and children on the autism spectrum as well as parents and carers. We run support groups in Bingley and Keighley, arrange outings and have a large library of resource books, magazines and DVDs. You do not need to be a member to use our services so feel free to come along to one of our support groups.
Event info:

This year we have been concentrating on raising funds and on 28th November we are holding a Big Night Out at Pennington’s Octagon Live with live music, casino, comedy, table magic and a grand prize draw. Tickets are only £15 and include supper – full information and ticket sales can be found on our website: http://KeighleyAutism.co.uk/BigNightOut

Throughout 2016 we will be using the funds to help our local families and will be discussing ideas over the coming months. Ideas include part-funded trips out and holidays, autism-friendly swimming sessions and more – depending on what our families need.

We have two regular support groups. The Keighley group meets at Lavender Fields on the 3rd Monday each month from 6pm-8pm and the Bingley Group meet at Great Shakes every Monday from 10am-12noon term-time. Both groups are free and all are welcome to join in discussions and listen to visiting speakers.

Geocaching at St Ives

This is a guest post from local dad Andy Walker with some ideas for things to do in Bingley with kids when the “boss” is away!

I’m a Dad of two living in Bingley. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone when I get somewhat worried when my wife tells me on a Sunday morning that she’s off out for the day and I need to hang out with the kids. Apparently the boss tells me I’m not allowed to spend another day getting the kids to ‘help’ rake the leaves and I actually need to occasionally do something else with them.

So I looked into Geocaching. I found a great free app which gives some locations around Bingley of caches that me and the kids can look for. So we decided, one Sunday, to go see what we could find up at St Ives.

St Ives is a great place to spend the day with the kids. We took a picnic (which the wife made, apparently a packet of crisps and an apple is not a meal) and spent the entire day collecting sticks, playing in the playground and looking for caches. There are at least 3 free caches in St Ives. The kids loved finding the hiding places and writing their names on the log books.

Here are some pictures of them having fun up at St Ives. It’s a great place and you don’t need any money unless you want to buy an ice cream. There is a cafe but we usually take our own food. I definitely recommend it for having fun with the kids.
