Foundry Hill Bar and Lounge

Bingley Mums has a new site sponsor – Foundry Hill Bar and Lounge! Somewhere I am ashamed to say that I have never been to until recently. But I thought it might be a nice idea to do a “mystery shopper” style date night with hubby, so I could get a true picture.

Foundry Hill has recently been taken over to be run as a family business by Emma and Andrew Bremner.  The family including two children Amy & Adam, live on a farm producing high welfare free range eggs – so all eggs served are direct from their other business The Rainbow Egg Company, based in Oxenhope.  Their highly experienced Head Chef, David Hartley, is passionate about preparing all dishes from fresh using good quality, locally sourced ingredients.  Even their burger buns, pasta and focaccia bread are made in their kitchen.  Nothing is bought in except fresh ingredients.

Andrew says, “I am only three weeks into running Foundry Hill and while I am very keen to preserve its already excellent reputation and small, but quality menu I am keen to build on that success.  We plan on bringing back sharing platters to the menu, something for kids and parents to enjoy together.  We are also planning on offering reduced portion options on selected main courses for smaller appetites both young and old.  Because we make all food from scratch though we are more than happy to customize meals where possible according to customer requirements such as serving starters as main children’s meals or splitting portions of mains to share.”

Foundry Hill has been the top rated restaurant in Bingley on Trip Advisor for a few years now.  This is something the new owners are very proud of and something they aspire to keep.  They are one of the few bars in Bingleyto offer an extensive cocktail, mocktail and shooters menu plus their gin selection is growing rapidly, 15 at last count including Masons Yorkshire Tea Gin.  They have 5 guest ales a week plus an extensive range of wine and spirits.  Their Prosecco from House of Townsend has won a few awards and is sold by the glass as well as the bottle (it’s stunning).

We went on a Friday night about 7pm and the bar area was very busy indeed and we had to push our way through to the “lounge” area as we had booked in for a meal. If you decide to eat at Foundry Hill, I really recommend booking as if we hadn’t, I doubt very much that we would have got a table. In the lounge area, there are a couple of sofas and tables – I would have taken photos but it seemed a bit rude to do that when people were eating, so I didn’t.

The bar has a really wide range of truly good drinks, including lots of draft beers and fizz – I tried the pink fizz which was stunning – as good as champagne. My husband had something from the gin menu – they had LOADS of gins available, and posh tonic too. So far so good.

I was surprised how busy the place was – in the lounge area there was a combination of people eating and people sitting in groups with their drinks, but there was a nice atmosphere. The menu is good with something for everyone, we went for burgers.

You can choose between french fries and thick cut chips, so we had one of each…

Now I’m not really a burger sort of person, but I have to say these were delicious, you could really tell that the meat was high quality and that the beef burgers are made by hand in house.

I’m also quite fussy about wine (though not later on in the night) and I thought the wine list was spot on and also good value. We ordered a glass of wine each and I must say it slipped down very easily.

During the day there are good facilities for children including baby change and high chairs, as well as a children’s menu.

We had a great experience and I have to say the waiting staff were very attentive and couldn’t do enough for us (they didn’t know I was doing a review). The busy-ness of the bar didn’t affect our enjoyment as all our drinks were brought to our table. I really recommend Foundry Hill for date nights, evenings out with friends or with the whole family. A real local gem!

Review – Galo’s Kitchen, Bingley

This blog has always been and always will be, about making Bingley a better place and promoting local businesses and events. I want to be part of making Bingley a great place to live for everyone – including my own family, and doing whatever I can to help others. Bingley has been on the up now, for a few years, and the recent addition of Martinez and soon a Marks and Spencers food, makes me very excited!

But now, we actually have a great restaurant too – to add to the already great cafes and bars – but we’ve never really had somewhere that not only works well for us as a family, but is also great for date nights for hubby and I – a rare thing admittedly these days. Introducing – Galo’s Kitchen!

“We are a family friendly Italian restaurant in Bingley. We are a local family run business who specialise in home cooked food.”

Bingley has been crying out for something like this for years – and now we have it! So on Wednesday night we went along with my parents-in-law, to check it out and see what the fuss was about. There is parking outside from 6pm, which was great for us as my father-in-law is disabled, and steps going upstairs from the street, but with plenty of room and a good banister, but just something to keep in mind if you’ve a pushchair or use a wheelchair.

The restaurant was quite empty when we got there at 6pm, but when we left at 8pm was almost full – on a week night in the summer holidays! Not bad going, already word has spread about the quality of the food and service.

We started with a glass of procecco, which was excellent. I like mine to be quite fizzy so I asked for a new bottle to be opened, which was done without question – perfect. We decided to go for the early bird menu, which frankly is amazing value.

I chose the calamari and the sea bream.

Calamari from the early bird menu

I was amazed at the portion sizes considering the cost – very generous indeed.

There was a kids menu too but unfortunately I didn’t get a photo – I think it was £5.95 which includes main (pizza, lasagne, pasta etc) a drink and a pudding – good value I thought.

My in laws ordered the steak for their main course, I was surprised to see steak on an early bird menu without a supplement, they said it was cooked to perfection.

For pudding, I ordered the Italian version of Creme Brulee – again it was huge! Absolutely amazing taste, I could tell it was home made rather than from a shop, but in a good way if you see what I mean? In fact everything had that fresh cooked, home made quality to it, you could tell that everything was made to order, though service was quick even so. Speaking of service, Zara was very friendly, attentive and great with the kids – just what you need.

Creme Brulee – amazing

I would highly recommend Galo’s Kitchen for families, couples and next time plan to try the A La Carte menu which includes scallops – I also noticed a lobster pasta on the specials board which sounded delicious.

I did not receive a free meal or discount for this review, all thoughts are my own.

Taylormade Treats

When we bought our house on the Swan Avenue estate in Eldwick/Gilstead nearly seven years ago we had it in mind that it was going to be great – within walking distance of a pub no less! Two children later and we rarely get an opportunity to go to the pub, but the arrival of Taylormade Treats made all the difference – here was a place we could go for a nice relaxing brunch or lunch, take the children and feel like we were “out and about”. Taylormade Treats really is a welcome addition to the local area, with a great menu with something for everyone, plus a great kids section too. For dessert there are plenty of options including the famous cupcakes that were the cornerstone of the original business. Ruth and Keith the owners are lovely and really nice people – which is just one of the reasons why we support this local business. Ruth makes the cupcakes as well as a plethora of other delicious temptations which includes cakes to order (these really are something special.
