This Christmas wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all made an effort to buy something from a local business? Every time I buy from Amazon, I think, I’m making a rich person even richer! But if you buy from a local business, you help to change someone’s life and make something they’re really passionate about into a success! Here are just a handful of local businesses you can support this year, and also get some truly wonderful and original gifts to treasure forever.
The Little Silver Company – Beautiful bespoke fine silver jewellery and keepsakes including Children’s handprints, footprints and fingerprints. Ceri says, “I set up from my love of jewellery and all things of sentimental value – there was no better keepsake than my children’s handprints and fingerprints captured forever in silver and so my business began..”
Leanne who runs Leanne’s Little Gift Company says, “I set up as a way of being able to do a job I love whilst being able to be a stay at home mum. We make and sell items for all occasions, if you can’t find a colour or design you are looking for just message us and we will try our best to source it.”
3. Jade says, “I set up Blossom Craft Company by myself not long ago. I have a 4 year old in reception and a 3 year old in nursery – I’m hoping that this gives me the best of both worlds- working from home being creative whilst having my little humans run around me! I have qualifications in fashion design and a BA Hons degree in costume design and textiles – this is what I enjoy! Creating ! .. my page at the moment is full of Christmas delights and hair bows for your little ‘uns.. and big ‘uns.”
4. Emma says, “I went back to work part time after maternity leave as I wanted to do something a bit different alongside my main job and still have the time at home with my little one so I set up Kids Bee Happy Sand Art!”
5. Adele says, “We are local mums that set up a business that celebrates family time and the precious memories you have along way ❤ we make personalised memory jars for all the family, personalised baubles, santas cookies in a jar, santas magic keys and lots of other Christmas goodies at the moment.” Find them at The Little Memories Company.
7. Cathryn says, “I’m a busy mum of 3 (children are 1, 3 and 5) and I opened Into the Woods 6 months ago. We do build a bear style teddies stuffed with our teddy bear machine, parties, fairytale pamper parties and fairytale photography set in our own enchanted wood, got some beautiful teddies and costumes in for Christmas.”
8. Emma says, “I set up my business ‘Little Petal Cakes‘ after realising returning to work after maternity leave was no longer a feasible option!
Like most grown women, shoe shopping is something I thoroughly enjoy. Actually that is a slight lie, I would enjoy were it not for the fact that I have enormous feet and me trying on shoes is a bit like the ugly sisters trying to get Cinderella’s glass slipper on most of the time – sad but true. However, children think slightly differently about these things, and apparently trying on shoes is not high on their list of priorities – despite the fact that the shoes are paid for by someone else – madness! There is nothing more frustrating than shelling out a load of cash for your children on something they don’t remotely care about.
In the past we’ve often done a “buy cheap buy twice” when it comes to shoes for our two sons, something which I am at pains to avoid doing in the future. So when I was offered the opportunity to review the shoe buying process at local children’s shoe shop Poppy Red I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out what shoe buying could be like.
The shop itself is just a few seconds walk from the main car park in Ilkley, and the first thing that strikes you is the inviting shop front and huge selection of children’s shoes – brands included Geox, Ugg, Lelli Kelly, Birkenstock and many many more. I think the shop at one time did ladies’ shoes but they have now decided to concentrate on children’s shoes – a really good move I think as I don’t think there is anywhere else locally doing the same thing. Word had obviously spread as there were a fair few people in the shop already, but it didn’t take long until we had our turn. I looked longingly at some pink sparkly slippers, but my 7 year old son didn’t seem too keen – so Geox it was.
Jenny, one of the owners, was serving us and instantly “got” my two sons and how to best include them in the buying process. She’s one of those people that children instantly build a rapport with and clearly has a lot of experience with kids. Although my 7 year old son can be a bit difficult and did NOT want to be there initially, she got him excited about some “ninja” looking shoes, and he couldn’t wait to try them on! I was really impressed with her professionalism and obvious knowledge about fitting children’s shoes, it’s something that only comes from having a passion for the service you’re offering, and can’t be replicated in the chain stores in my opinion. Another thing that’s great is that Poppy Red ensure ALL their staff are properly trained in shoe fitting so that every customer has the full experience – and this really shines through. Jenny even somehow managed to persuade my son to not go with the bright green shoes (which were awesome) and he selected some more sedate looking red and black shoes – with flashing lights (standard) which he now won’t take off! Co-owner Jenny says, “I’ve always loved working with children and and what woman doesn’t love shoes? Owning this business with my mum is my dream job! I love being front-facing and seeing our customers on a daily basis, it definitely helps influence our buying decision – sometimes I can even have a customer in mind when we’re looking at new collections.”
There’s also something really satisfying about supporting a local business and ensuring that really good shops like Poppy Red, who are clearly really passionate about what they do, carry on and don’t disappear. Every single shoe I saw in store was of a really high quality and you could just tell that this is the sort of shop that wouldn’t compromise on that. The man in front of me was buying school shoes for his son and I was really taken aback by how, quite frankly, beautiful they were!
A bit more information about the owners and ethos of the shop…
Co-owner Helen says:-
“All the staff are trained shoe fitters and able to advise on the best choice of shoe to fit all shapes and sizes. People often comment that they have been unable to find anything to fit in other shops but we are usually able to help thanks to the wide range of different brands we stock. We are experienced at fitting shoes with orthotic insoles, splints and other footwear inserts. Although my daughter Jenny and I have different roles, we always unite when we’re selecting new stock. What mother and daughter wouldn’t love hours of researching and buying new shoes? It couldn’t be more satisfying if we were buying for ourselves! It’s a real responsibility getting the right mix of quality and style that mums will approve of and kids will really love and we’re very particular about what brands we stock. “
The other thing that was different from the high street chains was the fact that they actually had the shoes that my son wanted in his actual size – this never seems to happen in other shops, and means that children – who don’t want to be there anyway – aren’t left disappointed.
One other thing that Jenny did, was to totally understand that my other son didn’t need new shoes, and instead she offered him some lovely flashing lights to stop him having a full on paddy whack. Nice touch. AND chocolate eggs/sweets never go unwanted at the end of some strenuous shoe trying on.
I really urge you to support this business – great service and top quality shoes. What’s not to like?

Here at Bingley Mums we are lucky enough to have the support of our sponsors, including local online Organic Baby Bibs specialist Mia Bambina.
Bingley Mum Becki set up Mia Bambina after the birth of her first child Mia back in 2006. Like a lot of little ones, Mia developed eczema and Becki found that some creams and washing products were making the problem worse. Becki also found that the clothes Mia was wearing were possibly adding to the problem as it turns out that a lot of clothes contain toxins that are present even in baby wear! This shocked Becki enough to immediately change how she shopped for Mia, and that organic cotton was the way forward for them, however back then there were limited options. After a lot of shopping around and realising there was hardly anything out there, Becki decided to begin her own organic and fairtrade clothes and toys website, where people can buy safe and ethically sourced products and learn about the advantages of going organic – so Mia Bambina was born.
It’s imperative that as mums we support other mums in business, especially in our local community, it’s a great way to do your bit to support the local area. Speaking of giving back, the lovely Becki has a fab bundle to give away to one lucky baby! Includes two organic bibs, crochet toadstool and fair trade wooden snail jigsaw. All you need to do is enter via this widget and visit Mia Bambina on facebook! For extra entries in the “hat”, follow the other instructions too.
We use rafflecopter for giveaways at Bingley Mums – because it’s a really fair way to do giveaways and keeps everything legal and above board. However some people have struggled to enter – you will need to click on “log in” when you see the widget and then sign into your facebook account. Ends 12AM 24th October 2015. Terms and conditions are available on the widget.

Becki says, “Mia Bambina is now an established business that I continue to learn from as I do my research into organic and fair trade. We have recently started our own range of organic cotton bandana bibs which I designed myself – these are great for mopping up baby’s dribble, safe in the knowledge that no harmful chemicals have been used in manufacture. We have a fantastic range of organic cotton babygrows and playsuits along with some gorgeous soft cuddly toys and rattles made from 100% organic cotton. Our funky wooden toys include a fabulous selection from Lanka Kade, their brightly coloured wooden baby toys and jigsaws aregreat for your baby’s developing brain.”
Bingley Mums is pleased to say that Mia Bambina has been added to our growing list of sponsors and we are pleased to be working alongside someone as passionate about her business as Becki.
